- Step 1: open the NAIC State Based Systems (SBS) lookup from the Illinois Department of Insurance agent lookup page and select Illinois as the jurisdiction.
- Step 2: set Search Type to Licensee and Entity Type to Individual (or Business Entity for an agency).
- Step 3: search by last name. Your NPN narrows it to one result but is not required. The record shows status, lines of authority, and the expiration date your CE deadline is built on.
Step 1: Open the Illinois lookup on SBS
Start at the IDOI agent lookup pageCompanies Agent Lookup.html Idoi.illinois.gov and follow its link into State Based Systems. On the SBS screen, use the Jurisdiction dropdown to select Illinois, then check the box to accept the NAIC terms and conditions. Nothing else on the page matters until Illinois is selected; the default jurisdiction is not Illinois, and searching under the wrong state returns no results.
Step 2: Choose Licensee, then Individual
Under Search Type, select Licensee. Under Entity Type, select Individual to find a producer, or Business Entity to find an agency or brokerage. If you want every licensee in a city, zip code, or line of authority rather than one person, open Advanced Criteria and filter there. For your own record, leave Advanced Criteria closed.
Step 3: Search by name and open your record
Type your last name and search. Add a first name if the list is long. Your National Producer Number narrows the results to exactly one record, but SBS does not require it. Click your name and the record opens to your license status, license number, lines of authority, and expiration date. That expiration date is the number the rest of this page is built around.
What should I check once I find my record?
Most producers confirm the word "Active" and close the tab. Four fields on that same screen decide whether your next renewal is a ten-minute task or a scramble:
- Expiration date: Illinois sets it to the last day of your birth month, every two years. Your real CE deadline sits 10 business days ahead of it, because IDOI requires hours to be banked on SBS by then.
- Lines of authority: Life, Accident and Health, Property, Casualty, Personal Lines, and any limited lines you hold. Adding a line later means another exam, so know what is already there.
- CE status: the lookup itself shows compliance status, but the hour-by-hour detail lives on your education transcript. When is my Illinois renewal date and what is due?
Illinois renews individual producer licenses every two years on the last day of the licensee's birth month. Between renewals, every resident producer completes 24 hours of continuing education. Three of those hours must be ethics taken in a classroom or live webinar; self-study ethics does not count in Illinois. The other 21 hours can be any IDOI-approved course, including self-study.
The deadline has a built-in twist. IDOI requires you to be CE compliant at least 10 business days before your renewal date, and the state rule recommends finishing coursework a full month early so your provider has time to report it.
