Quick Answer:
Walking into your Washington insurance exam with clear expectations reduces anxiety and improves performance. Here's exactly what you'll face on exam day, from check-in procedures to the questions themselves.
Washington insurance exams are computer-based, multiple-choice tests administered by PSI ServicesWaoic Test Takers.psiexams.com. Each exam contains both scored questions that count toward your result and unscored "pretest" questions being evaluated for future exams.
Pretest questions are mixed throughout the exam and are indistinguishable from scored questions. You won't know which are which, so approach every question with equal seriousness.
Question counts and time limits vary by exam type, but generally allow adequate time for careful reading and thoughtful responses. Most candidates finish with time remaining.
Every Washington insurance exam covers two main content areas:
General/National Content (approximately 70-75% of questions): Core insurance principles, policy structures, contract law, underwriting concepts, claims procedures, and product knowledge applicable across states.
State-Specific Content (approximately 25-30% of questions): Washington Insurance Code provisions, OIC regulations, state-specific consumer protections, licensing requirements, and compliance rules.
Both areas are weighted in your overall score. Strong general knowledge won't compensate for weak state-specific preparation, so allocate study time to both.
Life Insurance Exam: Types of life insurance policies, policy provisions and riders, annuities, federal tax considerations, policy ownership and beneficiary designations, Washington life insurance regulations.
Disability (Health) Insurance Exam: Medical expense insurance, disability income insurance, managed care plans, Medicare and Medicaid, group health insurance, HIPAA requirements, Washington health insurance regulations.
Property Insurance Exam: Property coverage principles, homeowners policies, commercial property forms, perils and exclusions, coinsurance, Washington property insurance regulations.
Casualty Insurance Exam: Liability coverage principles, auto insurance, commercial general liability, workers compensation concepts, professional liability, Washington casualty regulations.

Questions test various cognitive levels:
Recall questions test your memory of facts, definitions, and specific requirements.
Application questions present scenarios requiring you to apply concepts to specific situations.
Analysis questions ask you to evaluate options or determine appropriate responses to complex circumstances.
Simple memorization isn't sufficient. You need to understand concepts well enough to apply them in unfamiliar scenarios.
In-Person Testing:
Arrive 30 minutes early at the PSI testing center. Bring valid government-issued photo ID. Personal items including phones, watches, calculators, and bags are not permitted in the testing area. Most centers provide lockers for your belongings.
The proctor verifies your identity and explains testing procedures. You'll be seated at a computer terminal in a monitored testing room. No breaks are permitted once testing begins.
Remote Online Testing:
Log into PSI Bridge 30 minutes before your scheduled time. Your testing environment must be private with a clear desk and adequate lighting. Show your ID and room to the proctor via webcam. Your screen and webcam remain monitored throughout the exam.
Read each question completely before considering answers. Many wrong answers result from misreading questions or missing key words like "except," "not," or "all of the following."
Eliminate obviously wrong answers before selecting your choice. If unsure, make your best educated guess—unanswered questions are marked wrong, so never leave blanks.
Flag difficult questions to revisit after completing easier ones. Don't spend excessive time on any single question.
Results appear on screen immediately upon completing your exam. You'll see whether you passed or failed along with your score and a diagnostic breakdown by topic area.
If you pass, your score is transmitted to the OIC electronically. You can proceed with your license application through NIPR.
If you don't pass, use the diagnostic report to focus additional study before retaking. You can schedule a retake after a 24-hour waiting period.
