The world of insurance is constantly evolving, and so are the rules. In 2025, staying compliant as a licensed agent in California means keeping up with evolving CE requirements, new mandates, and more specialized training, and feeling overwhelmed. Don’t. We’ve got the clarity you need to move forward with confidence.
Every two years, California insurance agents must complete 24 hours of continuing education. Here’s the breakdown:
24 hours of total CE
3 hours of ethics
Courses must align with your license type (life, health, property, casualty, etc.)
New mandates under Senate Bill 263 add targeted training for specific lines of business. Depending on what you sell, the following may apply:
A one-time 4-hour Life Insurance Policies Training for non-term life products (required only if you were licensed on or after January 1, 2024)
2 hours of Variable Life Insurance Training every renewal cycle
An initial 8-hour Annuity Training, plus a 4-hour refresher every two years
These rules apply before you can sell, solicit, or negotiate these products, so if you’re not offering them yet but might in the future, it’s smart to take the training early.
You’ve got a full plate. CE can feel like just another obligation, but it’s also a chance to sharpen your skills and stay ahead of industry shifts. When approached strategically, CE becomes more than just a requirement. It’s an investment in staying relevant, credible, and competitive.
The best CE providers understand your world. Look for:
Mobile-friendly courses that fit your schedule
State-approved content specific to your license type
Updated materials that reflect the latest regulations
Engaging formats that keep you focused and moving forward
